Like a sign from nature that skin was always meant to be soft and soothed, organic aloe vera gel is a gift from mother nature.
Aloe vera is a green and spiky plant from the succulent family that grows in tropical and sub-tropical climates. People have used organic aloe vera for centuries to improve skin conditions like dry chapped skin, sun burn and heat rash. This version from Holland & Barrett can be used for all these reasons.
Whereas it has always been popular in the countries it is grown in (especially in ancient Egypt!), aloe vera products for skin are still in wide use all over the world, in countries including South Africa, India, Japan and China.
Two parts of the aloe vera plant are used as a topical product:
- the clear gel found inside the leaves
- the yellow substance, called latex, found just under the plant’s skin
When you snap or cut their fleshy stems, a thick and clear substance comes out known as natural aloe vera gel. As soon as you apply fresh aloe vera gel to the skin it produces a cooling effect, providing sweet relief after a day spent out in the sun.
Aloe vera products often contain a compound called glucomannan, which is said to boost the production of collagen and new skin cells. It has been said that it helps dry, cracked skin to become smooth and soft and can be used to maintain well-hydrated skin.
